MILLIE COOPER PARK

Craig Ranch | McKinney | Texas

This one-acre park sits in the heart of Craig Ranch, a nationally acclaimed master-planned community in North Texas.  Millie Cooper Park is located between office and residential development, joining together the urban and suburban aspects of the community.  With a yin-yang concept, DCBI designed the park with a balance of a structured grid design of paving and trees offsetting bermed lawn area edged by free flowing beds or ornamental grasses.  Near the Cooper Fitness Center at Craig Ranch and bounded by streets on all sides, the park provides visual intrigue for motorist while providing a comfortable setting for a quick stroll or picnic lunch.

SSLGC Activity and Discovery Park

Gonzales County | 6 miles north of Nixon | Texas

The SSLGC Activity and Discovery Park, located approximately 60 miles east of San Antonio, will provide a unique opportunity to educate the public about the source of the water that provides their everyday needs while at the same time creating an opportunity for recreation. The Schertz Seguin Local Government Corporation (SSLGC), owned by the cities of Schertz and Seguin, is a wholesale water supply system owning 1250 acres of land where a number of their wells draw water from the Carrizo Aquifer for consumer use.

The SSLGC requested the Landscape Architect to master plan the property, primarily for recreational uses with an emphasis on camping. However DCBA envisioned the opportunity to create a park for not only recreational purposes, but as a place of learning of natural systems and the entire water delivery process.

From an educational standpoint, the master plan includes further filtering of backwash leaving an existing treatment plant through a created wetland area prior to entering into a new 42-acre lake. An existing homestead would be converted into an Interpretative Center that would explain the water supply chain from aquifer to spigot. A connecting trail and boardwalk to and over the wetlands would allow the visitor to further experience and understand the value of plantings utilized for biofiltering.

Not only the terminus for the captured backwash water, the lake would provide fishing and boating opportunities. A pavilion would provide facilities for day camp activities and, since the water is acceptable for human contact after filtering, a beach would is also available for swimming.

DCBA was instrumental in expanding the client’s singular recreational goal for the property to a place of learning about the source of our water and the process of delivery to our home. Children on school field trips will be able to have a day of fun recreational activity, but also have an educational opportunity to learn about water and its’ importance as well as nature and the environment.

Heritage crossing

Garland | Texas

Heritage Crossing is situated on 4.6 acres spread across four quadrants of land on the north side of Downtown Garland.  The parcels are divided north-south by DART & DGNO Railroad and east-west by Sixth Street and, formerly being railroad right-of-way, had no previous improvements.  One parcel was renovated to be the new home for three historic structures:  Landmark Depot Museum, Rail Car, & Lyle House.  Ornamental metal fencing, with enhanced columns, was also installed along the property lines adjacent to the rail lines in all of the parcels.  The remaining parcels include meandering paths, brick paving, brick seat walls, berms, site lighting, landscaping, and a provision for a large sculpture.  Once complete, this once unusable space will be incorporated into an urban environment at the north portal leading into Downtown Garland.  The improvements will not only enhance the lives of those that live and work around the property, but also those driving by on the adjacent streets or arriving downtown via DART.

West city park

West | Texas

The West Fertilizer Company plant in the small town of West, Texas exploded on April 17, 2013 and resulted in fifteen people being killed and 150 buildings damaged or destroyed.  Included in the destruction was the town’s park which was located immediately adjacent to the blast site.

Realizing that the town could benefit from his expertise, Dave Baldwin volunteered his park planning services to the town on a pro-bono basis.  The result was a master plan for the 1 ½ acre site which recommended removing a street which previously traversed the park.  Removing of this street created the opportunity for expanded facilities.  The new design includes a new parking lot, renovated multi-use courts, large pavilion with stage and performance lawn for community events, playgrounds for individual age groups, and uninterrupted perimeter walking path.  Dave’s design also incorporated a recommendation for a memorial featuring outdoor rooms in which the visitor would move through sequentially and discover in each a different aspect of West and the explosion.  The individual rooms would display the town’s Czech heritage, the explosion and its impact on the town, and a raised overlook directed towards the blast site with aerial maps showing the pre-explosion conditions compared to the post-explosion area of devastation.  The last element would be a remembrance and prayer room memorializing those killed in the explosion.
